891 ABC Adelaide was originally known as 5AN and began transmitting in mid October 1937. Due to technology and growing popularity 5AN underwent a number of moves in location before finally settling in Collingwood in 1974. The name of the station was not changed to 891 until 2000.

891 have always retained a high level of popularity among the people of Adelaide as it is their local ABC network. They are known more for their broadcasting of sporting games and interviewing than music. Their news reporting is considered to be highly accurate and is the major reason for the stations popularity.
