The 2JJJ - ABC Triple J - 105.7 FM radio station was started in September 1974 just as an AM-band radio station. The station expanded to become the 2JJ or Double Jay radio station soon afterwards. The improvement of radio stations to expand on the AM-band was an innovative idea that began in Sydney, Australia. This required a new type of licensing than did the FM band so the government decided to change the class of radio listening. This was a very important step for local communities to have their own radio stations. ABC Triple J 105.7 radio station marked an historic change in Australian radio.
There was finally the opportunity for local residents to create their own community programs. The ability to have talkback radio now became the forerunner of many of the radio stations. The government helped support ABC Triple J 105.7 because the people shown an interest in having a local community radio station. The cost behind the new area in radio soon cost the broadcasters to start doing programs in a completely new way. Now it was required to present programs that the local community could participate and still give out national news, weather, and sports news.
