ABC Radio National was originally formed from 7 different radio station owned by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and the National Broadcasting Service. These radio stations known as 3AR, 5CL, 7Zl, 4QG, 6WN, 2CY and 2NA were merged under the ABC in 1932. Up until the mid 1980’s this station was known as Radio 2 and provided most of the national programming. It was not until the 1970’s that it took on the serious tone that it has become known for. It was not until 1985 that is was renamed to Radio National and as a result it is still occasionally referred to by its former name.

Radio National has 327 transmitters across Australia and it covers 98% of populated areas in the country. It also has a number of its shows relayed to ABC’s international station. The programs focus heavily on News and analysis; it is considered to be one of the best sources for news in the country. IT also has a number of talkback shows, but even these tend to focus on major news issues or on political opinions. ABC Radio National is the most popular radio station for news in Australia.
